Marianne Westman – Ceramics from Rörstrand

Marianne Westman (1928-2017) is one of the well known representatives of the illustrious Swedish ceramic design of the 20th century. She was one of the leading designers for the Rörstrand factory in the 1950s-1970s. Westman is represented at the Swedish National Museum of Art and Design. Marianne Westman – A Short Biography

The early years

Marianne Westman (1928-2017) was born in Falun in central Sweden. She started ceramics studies at the prestigious University College of Arts, Crafts and Design in Stockholm, in 1946. After graduation in 1950, Marianne was handpicked by the famous Rorstrand ceramic factory, in Lidköping. At first, she was reluctant to embark on a design career with Rorstrand. Her dream had always been to have her own ceramics workshop, in her hometown of Falun.

Marianne was only 22 when she started working for Rorstrand in Lidkoping. This was the company’s golden age and its porcelain manufacture was extremely successful abroad. A team of recognized artists were already in place, like Carl-Harry Stalhane and Hertha Bengtsson.

Success at Rorstrand

During the Rorstrand years from 1950 to 1971, Marianne was often quick to identify new trends and production methods. Her distinctive, lighthearted designs for household items, earned her a lasting place in Nordic design history. She was even called the "porcelain mom" by the Rorstrand workforce, because of her many porcelain successes. Marianne's designs, with successes like Mon Amie, Picknick and Red Top, represented almost half of Rorstrand's sales during their heyday.

In the 1960s, Westman expanded her range into artistic pieces made of stoneware, chamotte and iron. Glazes were thick and complex, with iron flowers and coarse structures. Shapes were simple, and the feeling rustic, yet elegant.

Freelancing years and textile design

Marianne Westman left Rorstrand in the early 1970s. She worked a few years for Skruf glassworks, and a few German ceramic factories. Marianne eventually returned to her hometown, Falun, in 1977 to design patterns for the family's textile studio. In 2008, Rörstrand relaunched the classic floral pattern of Mon Amie, in cooperation with Marianne Westman.
