Mari Simmulson (1911–2000) designed many classics for the Swedish Upsala-Ekeby company in the 1950s to 1970s. One of the most appreciated series is Rio from 1968. It consists of five earthenware bowls, lighters, candleholders, and jars. They have sturdy forms, relief decors, and blue or gray glaze.
The items are deep stamped on the lower side with UE, model number, and Mari’s mark (MS or Maris). The series was manufactured until 1971. Which of Mari’s Rio objects is your favorite?
