An Overview of Bertil Vallien’s Terra Series
Bertil Vallien is mainly associated with his internationally recognized glass art. But he first started as a ceramist at the art school Konstfack in Stockholm in 1955. From time to time, he has since designed for ceramic factories in both Sweden and the United States.
One of the most well-known of his pottery series is ”Terra” from the Rörstrand factory. It was designed in 1978 and consisted of animals, dishes, pots, and vases. They were made of stoneware with ancient relief patterns.
The Terra objects were often glazed in matte, earthy colors with a leather-like appearance. But they are also available as unglazed and thus white in color. Many of the pieces are available in different sizes. The lower sides are marked with "Rörstrand, Sweden, B. Vallien".
