An Overview of Josef Ekberg’s Sgraffito Objects

Josef Ekberg (1877-1945) designed many classics for the Swedish Gustavsberg company. Some of the most well-known objects are the Sgraffito pieces. They were launched by Josef and his colleague Gunnar Wennerberg in 1900 at the World Exhibition in Paris.

The Sgraffito objects are made of flintware, often with monumental forms, incised vegetative decor, and blue tones. They are named after the decoration technique where a sharp object is used to carve a pattern on a glazed surface. On the lower side, the pieces are usually signed with Gustavsberg, year, and monogram (JE).
