Paul Hoff's series "Endangered Species of Animals” – An Overview

During the 1960s, Gustavsberg’s Nordic competitors harvested success with their annual Christmas plates. The factory, therefore, decided to produce its own series of Christmas plates. Paul Hoff explains:

"I got the assignment because I was the youngest and most recently employed. In an attempt to avoid the task, I instead presented the idea of Endangered Species of Animals."

The series was produced from 1973 to 1994 and consisted of 22 plates with drawn motifs of various endangered animals. The plates, which had a diameter of 24 cm, were made of bone china and came with a box.

The animal motifs were screen printed in real gold on a paper. The motifs were then moved to the plate which was burned once more. Finally, the gold was polished to get the right shine.

"The first years, I wrote the information on the back myself, but the task was then handed over to experts, usually at the Swedish Museum of Natural History."

The series was popular in the 1970s and 1980s but then the interest slowly declined. In the last years, the plates were stamped with Rörstrand after a change in the ownership of the Gustavsberg factory.
