An Overview of Stig Lindberg's Faience Series

Stig Lindberg and Gustavsberg’s artistic leader Wilhelm Kåge designed the first faience objects in the early 1940s. They were made of earthenware with milky white glazes and strong colored geometric or floral patterns. During the next 25 years, about 150–200 pieces were made with a great range of motifs, color settings, and sizes.

The faiences were molded or thrown, and then decorated by hand in the Gustavsberg Studio. They were often signed with the ”Studio hand”, model mark, pattern mark, color mark, and painter’s mark. The faience series became a huge success in Sweden and abroad. In 1966, Stig launched a new set of faience object. They had rustic shapes, bluish white glazes, and linear patterns of different colors.

Faience Painter's Marks

In the Gustavsberg Studio, about 35–40 skilled painters decorated the faiences by hand during the 25 years of production. They had some degree of creative freedom choosing colors and patterns. The decorators marked the pieces differently according the signatures below:
