After graduating in 1946 from the Central School of Arts and Crafts, Anja Juurikkala (born 1923 in Heinola in Finland, died 2015) went to work at the Arabia Casting Department. She was skilled in casting, and upon joining the Industrial Design Department at Arabia after two years spent in Norway, she continued to design flatware, including various models of trays and bowls. She specialized in figurines depicting animals, life in Lapland, and Finnish folk life, and she prepared and decorated the pieces herself. She also designed numerous decorations for tableware services, the best known of which are hand-painted Aquarium and Krabba (Crayfish) marine-themed designs, the Heluna decorative motif, and the copperplate print Runo. Juurikkala painted her decorations herself, working with chromium, among other materials. After leaving Arabia in 1960, she has worked as a sculptor and teacher.
