Pauli Partanen (born 1949 in Helsinki, Finland) graduated from the Department of Glass and Ceramic Art of the University of Art and Design Helsinki in 1977 and began work at the Arabia factory in 1979. His work emphasizes artistic effort first, followed by product design. The best-known mass-produced items by Partanen from his five years with Arabia are the Lumina vases and shakers, the basic concept for which came from windblown snowdrifts.
Alongside mass-produced objects, he has designed many one-off pieces in stoneware and chamotte, with forms emphasized by different treatments of texture, engraving, and colored and lustre glazes. Partanen has been a freelance designer since 1984. His works also include one-off sculptures in glass.
